This year’s annual Wyoming Resource Education Days (WyRED) youth camp was cosponsored by Laramie Rivers Conservation District and Medicine Bow Conservation District and was held at the Bow River Guard Station south of Elk Mountain. The attendees had the opportunity to tour several different locations in Albany and Carbon counties. The first of these tours was to the Carlin Ranch east of Medicine Bow. While at the Carlin Ranch the campers learned about the different rangeland vegetation types and the unique cultural and paleontologic resources within the greater Rock Creek area.
The second day of camp found the campers touring the Wick/Buemee Wildlife Management Area and the Sims Ranch located near Arlington. At these two sites, the campers learned about the importance of proper rangeland management for both wildlife and livestock. The third day of tours included a fish farm north of Medicine Bow and the wind turbines near Medicine Bow. The last field trip included a tour to Brush Creek in the Medicine Bow Forest. Here the campers had the opportunity to learn about the history of tie hacking and historic sheep ranching from local historians.
The 2007 WyRED youth camp concluded with a range judging contest. This contest included identification of plant anatomy, plant identification and assessing rangeland condition. This years team winners where Lyman FFA (Justin Conder, Weston Maxfield, Derek Robinson and Blake Condos) and Douglas 4-H (Devlyn Green, Ty Patterson, Morgan Hays and Jessica Grant). The winner of the Brush Popper division was Timothy Heward of Medicine Bow. The Open Adult division was won by Rex Hamner of Lyman and Kim Gullickson of Douglas won the Professional division. |
