 JOB TITLE: Tree Planting & Garden Assistant

REPORTS TO: Natural Resource Specialist              

WORK SCHEDULE: May 1 – November 15, M-F with some required weekend hours            

WORKWEEK HOURS: 20-40 hours per week                         

JOB CATEGORY:  Labor/Service, Horticulture

WAGE:  $14/hr

Program Summary: Maintenance and upkeep of the grounds at LaBonte Community Garden, to include the greenhouse. 

Position Summary:  Assists with planting and maintaining the community garden at LaBonte Park.  Serves as the main point of contact and liaison for gardeners and members of the public during the garden season (May 1 – Nov 15). Additionally, during the month of May, this position with assist LRCD with planting trees for their Living Snow Fence program.

Job Responsibilities:

·         Planning, planting and maintenance of raised and in-ground garden beds, and containers

·         Irrigation and fertilization of garden beds and containers

·         Assisting LRCD staff with installation of Living Snow Fences and drip irrigation systems

·         Pruning, mulching, watering of trees and shrubs

·         Weeding

·         Mulch maintenance of paths around raised beds

·         Garden renovation and bed amendment

·         Greenhouse maintenance

·         Planting, transplanting and propagation of plant material

·         Monitoring and treatment of plant health problems

·         Operation and utilization of basic landscape tools and machinery (pruners, spades, rototillers, land mowers and edging equipment, etc.

·         Relaying any questions, concerns, issues experienced at LaBonte Community Garden to LRCD District Manager

·         Serve as LRCD liaison to other community garden partners including City of Laramie staff, UW Extension and Master Gardeners, and Laramie’s 4H Club.

·         Coordinate fall garden clean-up

·         Ensure all gardeners comply with their garden contract agreements

·         Other related work as needed as assigned, such as furniture and equipment maintenance, painting, etc.

 

Qualifications: 

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily:

·         Basic knowledge of horticulture science, gardening, plant nutrition or landscaping is preferred.

·         Experience with vehicle and equipment maintenance, mowing and minor construction

·         Clear and effective oral and written communication/presentation skills.

·         Self-motivated with ability to work independently.

·         Experience in team building and collaboration.

·         Willingness and flexibility to support all aspects of LRCD projects and programs.

·         Have current and clear driver’s license and ability to operate a motor vehicle safely

·         Ability to pull a utility trailer

Physical Demands:

Frequently required to stand, walk, bend, drive and occasionally lift up to 50 pounds. Working outside in summer weather conditions.

Working Location: 

LaBonte Park Community Garden, Living Snow Fence projects within Albany County, and Laramie Rivers Conservation District office.

Certification/Licensure:

•    Possess a valid driver’s license.

•    Appropriate driving record to be insured under LRCD’s auto liability policies.*

*This position requires the use of a company vehicle. If a personal vehicle is used by request of LRCD, mileage will be covered at the Federal Standard Rate for traveling between sites.
